Helping Hands Doula
My Philosophy

I firmly believe that new families need nurturing and gentle support and when
extended help is not available through family and friends, the help of a
Postpartum Doula is invaluable. My main goal as a Postpartum Doula is to
support the mother as much as she needs, to allow her to rest and recover
emotionally and physically from the birth, so that in turn, she can take care of
her baby. I focus on the mother's needs, but I also help the new parents get
confidence in their skills as parents and reinforce the parent-child bond.

As mentioned above, new families are not always as well surrounded as they
could be. Often great distances or work engagements prevent other family
members or friend to extend the help they would like to the new family.
Sometimes the physical and mental health of the new mother or baby is
compromised, and the parents need more help at home than they expected.
The arrival of twins or triplets can be an especially challenging time when the
new family might need an extra pair of hands.

During this period, what I want to offer to the family is emotional and
non-judgemental support while respecting the family's way of thinking,
culture and values. I offer this in a calm, pleasant, appropriate and discreet
way.

I also help parents understand and adjust to the unique personality of their
baby. I provide information to parents in finding what is needed (services,
products and professionals available in their community). It is not my place to
tell parents how they should care for their baby. But if they ask, I can offer as
much information as needed.

I don't impose my way of parenting because I believe that parents know what
is best for them and for their baby, and my goal is to take them in the
direction they want to go.
